Tattoos And All

Recently there was a tattoo parlor here in Amelia with a sign that really grabbed my attention. Their sign said, "Jesus loves me, tattoos and all."

Some random questions…

Who would disagree with their sign?

Is their sign a statement, possibly directed at the church?

What "Christian" attitudes do you think they've run into because of their "tats"?

If you are offended, then why are you offended?

Instead of answering these questions myself, I'll step out of the way and leave them for you to ponder.

This is a topic very near and dear to my heart. I have a 25 year old daughter, Sarah, who now has 2 tattoos. One is rather large and it seems there are plans to "add" to it. While this is not what I would choose for myself or my daughter, I have seen the reactions of people who are offended and disapprove. I believe for Sarah it is a statement – This was something that she could control and it is probably going to be around for a good long time. She is currently on a wayward track but I am as sure that Jesus does love her. He gave us the example to reach out to the hurting, the outcasts, and the wayward. He saw the heart of people and did not judge them on their outward appearances.

I believe that Satan can use what I call "static" to keep us from seeing like Jesus. Focusing on the tattoo and not the heart is one form of "static".

For anyone who reads this, I ask you to pray for my daughter and all of the other "Sarah's" who need to know Jesus.

As some one who has a rather large tattoo, and has many friends who are VERY inked up I can understand the stigma that most people face because of what they choose to put on their bodies. I have received flack about my tat from many people through the years, including people at churches that I have worked at, and many were none too happy in their responses. So, I definitely experienced the kind of attitudes can spark these kinds of statements.

With that being said I will also say that VERY SELDOM do you find a heavily tattooed person that hasn't lived that not-so-Christian lifestyle, though I'm sure they are out there. It's not a stereotype, it's just the truth.

To answer one of your questions and wrap up this unusually long comment I just want to say that this statement does offend me as a Christian. I am offended that a "Christian" person would ever treat another person as though they were outside the love of Christ because of their appearance, race, gender, or attitude. God loves everyone in every situation. But we Christians should be the ones telling everyone that Jesus loves them, and not having non-Christians explaining the most basic of Christian Doctrine to us.

Wow Joel couldn't explain it better myself, my tattoos remind me of my past that brought me back to christ. Wouldn't trade them for anything.
