Two Funerals, One Day

My marathon funeral day is over. Preaching two funerals in one day is pretty tiring. But I was really glad I could be there for both families.

While funerals aren't my favorite thing to do, there is something very special about them. When I officiate a funeral, I get a front row seat to observe how many lives the person touched. How deeply their family and friends loved them. How much they will be missed.

Every funeral I've ever done had its poignant moments. Today's services were no exception.

One of the joys of being a pastor for a lot of years is that you build up a large bank of beautiful memories. Definitely got a few more today.

When I first went into ministry, I was apprehensive about doing funerals because I wanted to help people and fix things and I could not fix it. It did not take me long to realize what a vital and enduring ministry it is in the lives you touch in this ministry. The ministry is in the lives of those left behind as they process their loss and grief and seek to return to normalcy. I discovered that it sealed a bond with people that I did not expect at first. They always remember that you were there. You honored their loved one. You hugged them and held them up. I found it to be very fulfilling to be privileged to enter into the core of the being of these people and to help them to face both life and death. And that bond became mutual.

Thank you for sharing God BEAUTIFUL words today. You did a wonderful job. Thank you for everything. We love you. Seems like my family is keeping you pretty busy this last 9 months. I hope this funeral stuff trails off soon. I'm running out of family. I'm starting to get nervous(: ):
