Random Life Goals

Some random goals I have in my life…

  • See a sitting president in person. My sister attended a rally for President Bush during the '04 campaign. She even shook his hand! All I want to do is see a president in the flesh. But if President Bush (or Obama or McCain) wanted to invite me to dinner, I could probably rearrange my schedule to make it happen.
  • See the aurora borealis (aka, the nothern lights). I have no doubt that pictures or video of this phenomenon do not do it justice. I want to venture up to the frozen north and see it for myself.

  • Go the Olympics. Summer, winter…I don't care. I just want to go. Chicago is bidding for the 2016 Summer Games. If they win the bid, I'll be spending my vacation eight years from now in the Windy City.

  • Go on an African safari. I've seen lions and elephants and rhinos in a zoo. But I want to see them up close. I want to see them when there is a chance that they could actually eat me or trample me. Sounds like a good time.

  • Attend a World Series game. Baseball is my favorite sport, so attending a championship game has always been a dream. Of course I'd love to attend a World Series where the Reds are playing for the title, but sometimes reality pours cold water on your dreams.
  • Just a handful of life goals I have. Next week, I'll get into some more serious spiritual goals I have in my life.

I hear you on the random goals of life… My friend and I managed to drive to Atlanta for a world series game against the Yanks in 1996. That was an awesome road trip and so much fun to be at the park!!! By the way… I hope you're feeling better.

We saw the Bush motorcade in Florida once. That was pretty impressive. A seriously mean helicopter buzzed over first as part of security. Also got to shake Bob Dole's hand when he was running.

I went to a World Series game in 1990 right here in Cincinnati. I went with of all people a "blind guy". He had sight at birth but lost it in his 20's due to a disease. The stadium (Riverfront) was all decked out for the occassion and I described the new look to my friend. He listened to Marty and Joe on the radio for the action on the field and of course could hear all of the crowd's reactions. I stood in line to buy those tickets that sold out quickly, but not before I had 4 in my hand!!!!! Right up there was also spending a week in Sarasota, Florida watching the Reds in spring training. Two great experiences I have had surrounding baseball. Next, go to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

I saw George and Barbara Bush as they came on a train to Marysville, Ohio. I got free tickets to the Reds playing I believe it was Baltimore in the World Series here in Cincinnnati in 1971(?). Unfortunately, they lost that game. In 1969, a friend at CCU (Then it was CBS), asked if I wanted to go with him to a Reds game. I agreed but did not know it was the season opener of the 100th Anniversary of baseball. I still have my genuine aluminum token commemorating the event. The Reds beat the Dodgers 2 to 1 in the game. That was the glory days of the Big Red Machine. My sister-in-law became friends with Davey Concepcion and she was able to meet all of the famous Reds like Bench, Rose, Tolan, Foster, etc.

While in Children's Hospital for a couple of weeks (Don't try to siphon gas at age 4.) I had a pretty cool visitor. Sparky Anderson walked through my hospital door in 1976. He signed an 8X10 picture of my favorite Red, Johnny Bench. Do I still have it you ask? Unfortunately, no.

I don't know what's more disturbing…the fact that you lost the picture or that you were siphoning gas at 4 years old!

Yeah, looking back on it, I'm not sure which hurt worse.
